Church Planter by Darrin Patrick (Review)

September 11, 2010

Last week, I took some time to review Darrin Patrick’s new book Church Planter.  Below is all three parts compiled in one place.

Church Planter: The Man, the Message, the Mission by Darrin Patrick

The Man

One does not have to look far to discover the plethora of books in the world of church planting. However, the majority of these books focus on the pragmatics of church planting—systems, techniques, processes, etc. Wisdom has often been discovered not in those who have learned to give all the answers, but rather from those who have learned to ask the right questions. The burning question among most church planting books seems to be, “How to plant a church?” In his book, Church Planter, Darrin Patrick takes a completely different approach, starting with a different, and I would argue, more pertinent question. He begins by asking not how to plant a church but who should plant a church. The first section of his book seeks to answer this question with the end goal to find men who are “fit to carry the message of Jesus to the world” (103). Patrick’s focus and prayer is that there would be a resurgence of “godly men to serve the church by the power of God’s Spirit” (17). This theme runs throughout this section and in many ways lays out a template for discovering and assessing men according to God’s Word.

Church Planter by Darrin Patrick

August 27, 2010

One of the most important books on church planting for my generation has just been released by Crossway.  Church Planter: The Man, the Message, the Mission written by Darrin Patrick is a book not only for church planters but for anyone called to gospel ministry.  I will be explaining its importance and giving a lengthy review next week.  Over at PLNTD, I will review the book by sections: the Man (Monday), the Message (Wednesday), and the Mission (Friday), and we will be giving away copies of the book via Twitter.

Darrin Patrick at Southeastern Seminary

April 13, 2010

Last week, Darrin Patrick spoke three times at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and they have no posted the videos of his messages and Q&A.  Darrin is a brother whom I have had the privilege of getting to know over the past couple of years, and I encourage those of you who are seeking to cultivate gospel centrality in your life and church should lay hold of his messages from The Journey (and elsewhere).

Here are the videos from SEBTS this past week:

Live Videocast with Darrin Patrick Tomorrow

December 17, 2007

Lance Ford, co-founder of Shapevine, recently announced in the meta that they will be doing a live videocast interview with Darrin Patrick tomorrow, Tuesday December 18 at 2:30 pm CST. Ford mentioned that it is free and only requires a quick login membership.

For those of you who have been following the MBC/Acts 29 situation, this will be an interview you will not want to miss. Darrin is pastor of The Journey–the church originally involved with the MBC probe into Acts 29 churches. Darrin has also served as VP of Acts 29 and has mentioned that there will be a scheduled debate with he and David Tolliver Roger Moran on the topic of alcohol later next year.

I think this interview will do much to fill in some gaps and provide a greater context to the situation there is Missouri. Let’s listen in for a better understanding of what is going on and how we can prayerfully support our fellow Southern Baptists.

Darrin Patrick on the Emerging Church Movement

October 20, 2007

I intended to mention this earlier in the week but simply forgot about it!  Letitia, who frequently comments here at P&P, mentioned to me that her pastor, Darrin Patrick (of The Journey Church in St. Louis) is speaking this weekend at the Fall 2007 Francis A. Schaeffer Lectures at Covenant Theological Seminary.  The theme of the lectures is “The Emerging Church: Discerning a Missional Milieu,” and it is my hunch that you will be able to find the audio on this page (I could be wrong).

It’s encouraging to find young voices in the SBC addressing the issues in the Emerging Church Movement.  A couple of weeks ago, SEBTS held a fine conference with guest speakers including Ed Stetzer and Mark Driscoll, and other voices such as Darrin Patrick and Dr. Mark Devine have also “emerged” recently to speak intelligently and critically of the ECM.   Lastly,  I should mention that Stetzer has pointed out a forthcoming book I think entitled Evangelicals Engage Emergent which will be published by Broadman & Holman.  Contributors include Darrell Bock, Scott Smith, John Hammett, Russell Moore, Mark Devine, Ed Stetzer, and Danny Akin (among others).  All this to say that I am heartened that Southern Baptists are stepping up to the plate when it comes to the ECM, and I hope more continue to take the approach of carefully studying firsthand the movement which is capturing the lives of so many people in the younger generation.
